The province of Newfoundland and Labrador is made up of Labrador which is located on the mainland (294,330 km2) and the island of Newfoundland (111,390 km2) which is the easternmost region of Canada. The population is 533,710, 94% of the inhabitants live on the island of Newfoundland and more than 50% in the Avalon region (near the capital St. John's). The province was the last to join Canada in 1949.
The oil industry, mining, banking and insurance, health, construction, customer service and the field of information technology are some of the most important sectors.
